By understanding the purpose and proper use of each material, you'll be able to choose the right supplies for your projects and build a strong foundation for creating successful acrylic paintings.

Beginner Course 2: Line / Shape / Form

In this class, you'll discover how every abstract painting begins with the simple elements of line, shape, and form. Through a series of fun, hands-on exercises, you'll explore a variety of line types and mark-making techniques that add movement, texture, and expression to your artwork. You'll learn how lines connect to create shapes, how shapes become three-dimensional forms, and how these basic elements work together to build strong compositions. As you practice, you'll also begin developing your own personal line style, giving your artwork a unique look and helping you gain confidence in your creative abilities. By the end of the class, you'll have a solid foundation in the fundamental building blocks of abstract acrylic painting and be ready to apply these skills to future projects.

Beginner Course 3: Texture

In this class, you'll explore how texture can add depth, interest, and visual excitement to your abstract paintings. You'll learn the difference between actual texture, created with mediums and tools, and the illusion of texture created with paint. Using materials such as modeling paste, gel medium, palette knives, scrapers, stencils, and everyday tools, you'll experiment with a variety of techniques to create unique textures and patterns. By the end of the class, you'll understand how texture can enhance your artwork, create focal points, and bring a new level of dimension and expression to your abstract paintings.

Beginner Course 4: Color / Value

In this class, you'll learn the basics of color theory and how to use the color wheel as a guide for mixing and choosing colors. You'll create your own color wheel and value chart while exploring primary, secondary, and tertiary colors, as well as tints, tones, and shades. You'll also learn about warm and cool colors, complementary and analogous color schemes, and how value affects the mood, depth, and contrast of a painting. By the end of the class, you'll have a strong foundation in color mixing and the confidence to make thoughtful color choices in your abstract acrylic paintings.

Beginner Course 5: Space / Composition

In this class, you'll learn how space and composition work together to create artwork that feels balanced, intentional, and visually interesting. You'll explore how artists use the areas around, between, and within objects to create a sense of depth, movement, and dimension. Through hands-on exercises, you'll practice organizing the elements of art—such as line, shape, color, texture, and space—to create strong abstract compositions. You'll experiment with different composition techniques, including horizon lines, cruciform designs, repeat patterns, and wallpaper-style arrangements. You'll also review the importance of foreground, middle ground, and background, and learn how the rule of thirds can help guide placement and create a more engaging painting. By the end of the class, you'll have a better understanding of how to arrange visual elements with confidence and create compositions that support your artistic expression in abstract acrylic painting.

Beginner Course 6: Canvas Prep

In this class, you'll learn the final steps for preparing your acrylic painting to be displayed and enjoyed. You'll discover how to properly label your artwork with important information such as your name, website, size, medium, and title. You'll also learn how to finish and protect your painting using different varnishes and finishing products, including tar gel, leveling gel, acrylic varnishes, and polyurethane varnish. In addition, you'll learn how to attach D-rings and wire for safe and professional hanging. By the end of the class, you'll have the knowledge and confidence to complete your artwork with a polished, gallery-ready finish.
